Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

dental implants Dental implants can be life-changing. If you’re considering dental implants, it’s important to understand whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure. At Oral and Facial Institute of Houston, Dr. L.T. Johnson and our dental care team work to provide you with comfortable, effective dental treatments that help you become proud of your smile. Let’s take a look at who is a good candidate for dental implants.

Overall Good Health

Before undergoing the dental implant process, it’s important that patients have good overall health, as well as good dental health. Underlying health issues can hinder the healing process and impact the success of the surgery. It’s important to disclose any health conditions to your dentist prior to getting dental implant surgery. Oral health conditions, like gum disease, can also lessen the likelihood of a successful dental implant procedure.

Non-Smokers

Smoking increases the risk of implant failure. If you smoke but are otherwise a good candidate for implant surgery, talk with your dentist about how long you’ll need to be smoke-free before you can undergo treatment. Talk with your primary care provider for help with quitting smoking, if necessary.

Sufficient Bone Density

Your dental implants need a solid foundational structure in order to stay put, and it’s important that you have enough bone density to hold your implants in place. If your bones are not dense enough to hold implants, your oral surgeon may recommend bone graft surgery in order to increase bone density and create a solid space for your dental implants.
